Lorraine Gary (born Lorraine Gottfried; August 16, 1937) is an American actress best known for her role as Ellen Brody in Jaws, Jaws 2, and Jaws: The Revenge. She also appeared in 1941 and Car Wash.

Early Life

Gary was born as Lorraine Gottfried in Forest Hills, Queens, New York on August 16th, 1937, to Betty and George Gottfried, an entertainment business manager.[1] At an early age, Lorraine moved to Los Angeles, where she was raised. At age 16, she won a best actress award in a competition at the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse. She was offered a scholarship to enroll at the Pasadena Playhouse, but declined and attended Columbia University as a political science major instead. [2]

Career

Gary began her acting career in the late 60s doing guest appearances on several popular TV shows. These include Night Gallery, The Virginian Dragnet 1967, McCloud, Kojak and The F.B.I..

[3]Gary began her first major acting role when she was a guest star on seven episodes of the TV series Ironside, among them "Tom Dayton Is Loose Among Us", in which she played the substitute librarian Miss Kirk, who pushes the unstable Tom Dayton too hard, and "In Search of an Artist," as a woman with a drinking problem who may have been involved in a murder.

Personal Life

She is married to entertainment industry executive Sidney Sheinberg, with whom she had two children. They have been married since August 19, 1956. [4] The character Lorraine Baines McFly from the Back to the Future trilogy is named after her.[5] She retired for eight years after 1941 but then came out of her voluntary retirement to reprise Ellen Brody in Jaws: The Revenge. She also has done interviews for the making of Jaws. She has not acted on film or television since then.

Gary revealed in the making of Jaws that she is Jewish.
