A. Thomas Malthus argued that goods and services would increase arithmetically while population would increase geometrically, thereby assuring a continuation of poverty among the lower classes of England. He made these observations and proposed his theory during the early days of the industrial revolution, while Great Britain was undergoing vast population growth, and for a short while, it looked like he might be right. The theory was instrumental in leading Darwin to his theory of evolution and also provided important fodder to Karl Marx. However, advances in medicine eventually torpedoed Malthus' boat. Today, women in industrialized countries have almost absolute control over their reproductive functions, so the claim of geometric increase… [cont.]
