Blockbuster, as applied to film or theatre, denotes a very popular and/or successful production. The entertainment industry use was originally theatrical slang referring to a particularly successful play but is now used primarily by the film industry.

Origin of the term

Although some entertainment histories apparently cite it as originally referring to a play that is so successful that competing theaters on the block are "busted" and driven out of business, the OED cites a 1957 use which is simply as a term of "biggest", after the bombs. Whatever its origin, the term quickly caught on as a way to describe a hit, and has subsequently been applied to productions other than plays and films, including novels and multi-million selling computer/console game titles.

In film, a number of terms were used to describe a hit. In the 1970s these included: spectacular (The Wall Street Journal), super-grosser (New York Times), and super-blockbuster (Variety). In 1975 the usage of 'blockbuster' for films coalesced around Steven Spielberg's Jaws, and became perceived as something new: a cultural phenomenon, a fast-paced exciting entertainment, almost a genre. Audiences interacted with such films, talked about them afterwards, and went back to see them again just for the thrill.

Hi, I was wondering for people who've worked at a video store could help me out with few questions.?
Q. I am 17 years old with many volunteer experience and a work experience but never have been employed for a real job. I've been a little, er, desperate for a job lately, but i'm pretty picky--i dont want to work at a fastfood place, instead i want to work at a video store since it is my biggest interest..(movies, entertainment). I;ve thought about applying for local theatres (my second choice) I would like to know what the age limit is to work at, say blockbuster and the qualifications/skills they would look for or expect. Do the employer train you if you get hired, as well?

A. You have to be at least 18 to work in a video store due to the adult content. I'm not sure about Blockbuster, but I work for Family Video and they look for people that can work effectively in stressful situations, have great customer service skills, can make quick decisions and can work flexable hours (this is the condensed version). Try starting out at the movie theaters until you're 18 and then apply at the video store. Good luck!

Survey: Disc Vs. Digital Copy
Q. In your opinion do you think that Hard Disk Copies of dvd's are starting to drop simply because of the Digital Copy? I love DVS, and i love the art for them but it seems to me like it could be a dying technology... i have recently just built a computer for the sole reason of having an entertainment system in which i start to put all my itunes movies (hate itunes) and digital copies that comes with dvds...even blockbuster or netfilx has the download rentals, not to mention the itunes store... seems to me like the days of DVD's or hard copies at all might be numbered... (doing a report on format wars for class i'd really like some input here... pls?) -Also what is your opinion on Format wars of any kind? what do you think it has for an… [cont.]

Why exactly are so many people stupid?
Q. I don't get it, people seem to enjoy living in ignorance. Quick to judge, dismissive to anything that doesn't fit their narrow world view, and accepting anything popular. Has anyone watched a blockbuster movie? Boring, bland, inoffensive, predictable trite. Yet thoughtful movies that try to get people to think in new perspectives become cult. Same with music, who exactly is buying this rap r&b garbage? Does no one have taste in entertainment? Why are so many good ideas 'controversial'? How can anyone believe there is an invisible man in the sky, watching over everything we do? How can homosexuality and marijuana still have opposition? I'm sorry, but turning on the TV I'm offended at how safe and bland and politically correct it is; I'm… [cont.]

A. Im surprised how you can want to 'demand more from life' when you are clearly sitting in front of a computer on Yahoo when theres a world of stimulation outside of your house to be experienced =)
